Interview

What inspires your work?

"What inspires my work is the actual vintage shops that I pass by anywhere I go or travel. I take time to just admire the beauty of every detail and especially the atmosphere inside. I love the ones that are lit up inside and you can see everything through the big windows. It has this very cozy atmosphere that I try to portray in my paintings."

How would you describe your design process?

"My design process starts with gathering reference photos of exterior of vintage shops as well as interior of the specific shop I’m going for. I then create rough sketches of what I envision and then sketch my final drawing with all the exact measurements and all the details of the inside."

What is one thing you wish you had known before you started selling your work?

"I wish I knew that building a business is way more work than I expected or foreseen. I would of took my time on it, planned out every detail more carefully and wouldn’t rush like I did. I set myself a deadline which was too short. Business has a lot of moving parts that need to be thought through and planned out carefully. It also requires testing and fixing before starting."

What is your favorite piece you have made and why?

"My favorite piece is “Antique Shop”. It has all the things I absolutely adore like stained glass windows, chandeliers, gold framed paintings. I also love the color palette that I chose for it, this painting is basically packed with all the pieces I love looking at in the actual vintage shops."

What is the biggest challenge you have faced with this career?

"The biggest challenge I face is inconsistency in sales and it comes from Social Media algorithms that keep on changing, which change how many people can actually find my page and website. There are good times but also low and it’s challenging to figure out how to balance it."

Is there any advice you would give to other artists?

"The advice I would give to someone that wants to start something similar would be to first definitely start with social media. Putting yourself out there is your way of advertising about yourself and your product. Find your niche and stick to it, that is another very important part. Be consistent with your work."

Is there anything else you would like to add?

"Do what is most inspiring to you, and people will feel it. Know your “WHY”, why are you even doing this and find what motivates you to keep going even when hard times hit. That is going to be your foundation that you build on. And foundation needs to be very strong to last through the ups and downs."
